An Artisan locally made British Lumpwood Charcoal – its benefits are; easy lighting, quick to reach cooking temperature, burns cleanly and leaves only ash.

Using the latest 21st century technology to create this quality product here at Joy Lane and Sons we manufacture the charcoal in a retort system, this is efficient by pyrolising 100% of the wood in the retort chamber and so less wood is used to create the charcoal as the gases from the chamber are reused in the burning operation, clean burning in its firing it releases 75% fewer pollutants than standard charcoal manufacturing processes, only steam from the heated wood is released from the retort.

The timber comes from sustainable sources from FSC forestry commission woodlands such as Cannock Chase. The charcoal burns in a clean and efficient way

The benefits ;Staffordshire British Lumpwood Charcoal is made using locally felled timber, creating an easy lighting and clean burning product which burns with virtually no smoke.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING OUR CHARCOAL

The process of making charcoal begins with the timber being cut to fit in the kiln, we use a retort to create our charcoal. A retort creates a higher yield of charcoal each burn but also creates less pollutants as the gases created from heating the wood are pumped into the firebox to heat the timber turning it from logs to charcoal.

Step 1 filling the kiln , here we are using locally felled Ash

C1

2. closing the heavy doors and ensuring an airtight seal all the way around both sets of doors

C2

3. lighting the kiln fire

C3

4.heating the kiln to 450c to start to release and burn its own gases from within the timber

C4

Steam is being released from the cooked wood at this time

C4

Once at 450c the gases are directed into the firebox to use to heat the retort for 12 to 24 hours dependent upon wood species and moisture content of the wood constant monitoring of the temperature is required from this point onwards

C5

After no more gas is being produced we allow the kiln to naturally cool down, this can take 24 to 48 hours to ensure down to 10c before we open the doors.

C6

And here after 24hours after with constant temperature checking we have a kiln full of pure Staffordshire Charcoal, made from local timber on site at our Yard in Stramshall.
